Keeping the engine running at the right temperature is vital for reliable performance, extended life, and fuel efficiency. The engine cooling system uses coolant fluid to absorb excessive heat from the engine and carries it to the radiator where the heat is removed. Coolant fluid completes this cycle repeatedly and requires routine inspections and exchange service when found to be in a defective state of performance. The two primary limitations of coolant are worn components allowing leaks and contamination.

When does Coolant Need to be Exchanged?

Although the coolant exchange intervals vary across Kia models and years, all coolant needs routine inspections and exchange service at the recommended miles. The Kia Optima has a coolant exchange interval every 25,000 miles, Soul every 30,000 miles, Forte every 60,000 miles, and Sorento at 60,000 miles and then every 30,000. We recommend referencing the owner’s booklet to know your Kia model’s routine maintenance schedule and exchange the coolant promptly when the mileage comes.

Warning Signs of Bad Coolant

While it is essential to have the coolant exchanged at the recommended miles, it is equally important to know the signs of defective coolant and get it exchanged promptly in response to the warning signs of a problem. If you experience any of these warning signs, it is smart to get the coolant inspected and exchanged if needed as quickly as possible:

• Dashboard coolant light comes on
• Average engine temperature is different – can be higher or lower than usual
• Heater is not working properly
• Leaking coolant found puddled under the vehicle
• Reduced fuel efficiency
• Smelling the sweet odor of coolant
